Maple Syrup

Maple Syrup

Trois-Pistoles Quebec, Canada

How is it produced?

Maple syrup is produced by extracting the sap from the sugar maple tree and slowly boiling it down into a thicker, more concentrated, sweet syrup. ‘Pure Maple Syrup’ cannot have any other additives.

Describe the supply chain to the store shelf in Canada:

The maple farmers harvest the sap, they boil it down in their ‘sugar shacks’, in Quebec they must sell to the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers Federation (QMSP), who then either store it or sell it to bottling companies who pour it into the fancy maple-shaped bottles which adorn the aisles of every Canadian grocery store.

What is the power balance between the producer and seller?

The seller, QMSP, holds regulations over producers that require them to sell in bulk only to itself. The power is completely held by the seller, this has pushed some producers to sell their maple syrup on the black market.

Can you recommend changes to the system to improve the balance?

Try to find a balance between the QMSP purchasing cost and the cost if the farmers sell it themselves. Providing a payment scheme here may alleviate the resistance of the maple syrup rebels.
