Assam Loose Leaf Black Tea

Assam, India

How is it produced?

Assam tea is grown in Assams tea estates in India. They use methods to grow it. The tea plants are grown in the areas of Assam. This region has weather for tea plants. The tea leaves are picked from the plants. Then they are processed, dried and packed. This tea is then exported to places. Assam tea is known for its quality. People like to drink Assam tea. It is made in tea estates, in Assam.

Describe the supply chain to the store shelf in Canada:

The tea is picked in Assam. Then it is. Packed. After that the tea is sent to countries. The tea reaches Canada. Goes to Canadian suppliers. The Canadian suppliers send the tea to stores, like Walmart, Superstore or SaveOn Foods where people can buy the tea.

What is the power balance between the producer and seller?

The power balance is often not fair to producers. Big companies like corporations control the price and distribution. They are usually the ones who decide how much the product costs and how it gets to the consumer. These big companies often make a lot of money while small producers in places like Assam only get a part of what the product sells for. The producers in Assam do not get money from the sale of their products. They usually only get a portion of the retail price. Big tea distributors in Canada are one example of these companies. They have a lot of control over the tea market. Small producers, in Assam often struggle because of this.

Can you recommend changes to the system to improve the balance?

The balance is not right. We need to make it easier for tea producers to sell directly to retailers. This way we can cut out the men and make sure the tea workers get paid fairly. We should also help out the cooperatives and fair-trade organizations. They can make sure the tea producers get a deal. Tea producers will get money and better benefits if we do this.
