Egypt
How is it produced?
- Silk and Snow is a Canadian company established in 2017 with the goal of selling mattresses, bed sheets and any bed essentials. Silk and Snow are proud that they offer to Canadian customers 100% certified Egyptian cotton bed sheets. The cotton is bought from manufacturers accredited by Cotton Egyptian Association, then the cotton is manufactured into bed sheets in Portugal and sent to Canada.
- Egyptian Cotton is accredited as the best cotton in the world from quality, to feel and durability (Egyptian Cotton, 2023). This cotton gets its fine qualities because of the weather in Egypt and its proximity to the Nile River, growing in its fertile lands in the delta. The long fibers of Egyptian cotton length and strength of its fibers allows to reach 1000 thread count.
- The Cotton Egyptian Association is a non-profit association that certifies that the cotton is undoubtedly one-hundred percent Egyptian cotton and not a blend. With this certification, international companies can buy certified Egyptian cotton to use in their manufacturing and be certain that their customers are getting the best quality.
Describe the supply chain to the store shelf in Canada:
- he supply chain starts with Silk and Snow choosing an accredited manufacturer of Egyptian Cotton. The CEA rigorous accreditation process helps Silk and Snow determine all the process of growing and harvesting the cotton. Then, the cotton is shipped to Portugal.
- “The Egyptian Cotton is further processed and spun into usable yarn in Portugal by the Marinho family, who own and operate a Portuguese textile company in Santo Tirso” (Silk & Snow, 2023).
- The cotton is taken to the city of Guimarães in Portugal, a city known for its rich history in textiles. In the city, the textile is dyed in a facility that minimizes its environmental effects (Silk & Snow, 2023).
- Finally, the textile is prepared and cut by the Costa Family. “All of the garments produced by the Costa family are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certified, ensuring they are free of harmful chemicals” (Silk & Snow, 2023).
- The finished product is shipped to the store in Toronto, Canada, but also customers can order online, and it will be shipped to their home addresses.
What is the power balance between the producer and seller?
- ill today, cotton represents the “most consumed natural fibre” (Voora, et.al, 2023). While COVID-19 did slow down the planting and harvesting of cotton, experts still expect an equilibrium balance between supply and demand (Voora, et.al, 2023).
- Egyptian cotton demand got even more due to the United States banning all products made from Chinese cotton in 2021 (Voora, et.al, 2023). This decision shifted a lot of buyers to change from Chinese cotton to Egyptian cotton which helped solidify an equilibrium in the market.
- However, bargaining power remains with multinational companies who own the largest shares of the cotton market.
Can you recommend changes to the system to improve the balance?
- Egypt has taken all the recommendation by experts in the last decade and put it into work. The Cotton Egyptian Association is an embodiment of the country’s commitment to its cotton as one of the best in the world and to advertise as such with the full ability of buyers to get accredited cotton.
- Furthermore, the governments of all cotton producing countries should help stabilize cotton prices by subsidies and any other means to help farmers battle changing weather and navigate through economic uncertainties.
